What is the Big Five Personality Test?

Also called the OCEAN model or the five-factor model, the Big Five Personality Test is used for measuring an individual’s personality traits. It is a psychological assessment tool that breaks down personality into five dimensions including openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. These five traits form the term ‘OCEAN’ which stands for openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.

Key Elements of the Big Five Personality Test

As the name of the test suggests, there are five major aspects tied to the test to determine an individual’s ability to explore new experiences, ability to be organized and dependable, sociability, compassion, mental stability, etc.

Openness to Experience

One of the aspects explored in the Big Five Personality Test is openness to experience. This is an assessment of an individual’s openness to explore new experiences. If someone is open to exploring arts, emotions, unusual ideas, and new experiences, such an individual would be more curious and creative, as compared to closed people. This aspect is a measure of how an individual is willing to open up to something new and in the process, expand their ability to learn new things and be creative.

Conscientiousness

This is a measure of the ability of an individual to be responsible, organized, and dependable. Some people are more organized than others, whereas others can be careless, unreliable, and as a result might find themselves facing a range of social issues. Understanding the level of conscientiousness can help an individual make lifestyle changes (if needed) and assess the best way to determine how to fix potential issues caused due to the lack of conscientiousness.

Extraversion

Some people are social butterflies, whereas others like to keep to themselves. There are also people that can walk between these two fine lines without much trouble. The level of extraversion reflects the sociability, energy levels, simulation seeking behavior, and energy in a social setting. Some people can feel drained in social gatherings, whereas others feed on such an environment and feel rejuvenated. Understanding such motivations can be a great way to move forward with organizing your life to achieve desired goals and to look after your mental health.

Agreeableness

People who are more agreeable tend to value social harmony and are able to get along better with others. The level of compassion, cooperativeness, and empathy affects one’s personality in a big way. Hence, evaluation of agreeableness is a big part of the Big Five Personality Test.

Neuroticism

There are a number of factors that can affect emotional stability, cause anxiety, mood swings, and make one feel frequently stressed. Understanding neuroticism can help identify such factors.
